William Medina Santana sportsman: Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps

The following text is about the life of one of the best athletes for me, attending to the 2012 Olympics’ games in London- 2012. In this opportunity is this city in charged to welcome the most outstanding athletes of the world.

Here, I want to focus in one participant in particular. His name is Michael Phelps, is my sport hero. He is from Maryland (United States) and he was born on June 30, 1985 (27 years old). He started his sport life at the age of 15 years. He is the fastest swimmer in the world and he is who won more gold medals in the Olympics game of Beijing 2008.

Being said that; let’s take a look about his sport life, Michael Phelps is an American swimmer; Phelps began swimming at the age of seven, partly because of the influence of his sisters and partly to provide him with an outlet for his energy. He has participated in eleven important events, and he has broken 39 records. After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation, which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthier lifestyles. He expects to do further work with his foundation after the 2012 Olympics, which he has said will be his last.

Among his biggest achievements, it is important to mention that he won some of the greatest awards in the story of swimming. Phelps was a USA Olympic Team Member in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012, and holds the records for most Olympic gold medals, most such medals in individual events, and most such medals at single games, in Beijing 2008. A street in his hometown of Baltimore was renamed The Michael Phelps Way in 2004. On April 9, 2009, Phelps was invited to appear before the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate, to be honored for his Olympic accomplishments.

Phelps has also received the following awards:
·         Swimming World Magazine World Swimmer of the Year Award: 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009[219]
·         American Swimmer of the Year Award: 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
·         Golden Goggle Male Performance of the Year: 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
·         Golden Goggle Relay Performance of the Year: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
·         Golden Goggle Male Athlete of the Year: 2004, 2007, 2008
·         USOC Sportsman of the Year Award: 2004, 2008
·         James E. Sullivan Award: 2003
·         Laurels World Sports Sportsman of the Year Award (Nominated): 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009
·         Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year: 2008

To conclude this written, it is necessary for me to say that Michael Phelps is an athlete who has proved that no matter the conditions, it is possible to success in life, so, He is for me, a very important and interesting role model. I hope, he wing the gold in London.
Also I chose him because he is the best swimmer in the world and he started his sports life with a bet with his sister, so that’s funny.

Michael Phelps won six medals in this Olympics, he doesn’t won eight like in the last Olympics but he is proud because he is the best swimmer in the world.

Michael Phelps teaches me that if you want to do it you can do it, and that anyone can do whatever he wants.
